Deposits for booking (to be paid back if all went well)

Is it possible to require a deposit for things like property damage, stolen stuff, too many guests, overtime, etc.? I know we can charge more after, but just curious if Peerspace has considered doing this. If so, what do they (and fellow hosts) think of this? It’s sort of “landlordy,” and might create a barrier to entry… Just curious what everyone’s thoughts are on this possibility.

Hi @Eve_C - Thank you for your post! I’m happy to provide clarity on security/damage deposits.

Hosts are allowed to require a refundable day-of security/damage deposit from guests in the form of a check or credit card authorization, such as Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, etc. This deposit is only to cover potential damages that occur during the booking and cannot be used for other charges.

For Additional Charges - Such as charges for add-ons, extra attendees, overtime, etc., these must still be processed through the Peerspace platform following the standard process outlined here.

For Missing or Stolen Items - Hosts are responsible for safeguarding personal belongings during a booking. If any items go missing, we recommend reaching out to the guest via Peerspace messages to see if they can return the items or contacting local law enforcement, as Peerspace cannot pursue charges for lost or stolen items. That said, you are always welcome to reach out to our Support Team, and we will be happy to review the situation and provide assistance where possible.

Please note that Peerspace does not support processing security deposits through our platform. If no damages occur, the deposit should be returned to the guest in person at the end of the booking. For this reason, security deposits should not be charged as an add-on through the Peerspace platform.

If you choose to require a security deposit, it must adhere to all of the following guidelines:

  • Be clearly stated in your listing’s Host Rules section

  • Include the monetary value

  • Include the method of collection (check, PayPal, etc.)

By booking through Peerspace, guests agree to cover any damages caused by them or their invitees during the booking. Any incidents will be resolved through the Peerspace Dispute Resolution process, and if a security deposit was collected, you may be asked to provide supporting evidence.

For more information on security deposits, please see our Terms and Conditions.

Thank you for the update. I too, had this question, however based on your response… it is quite difficult to require such things when they’ve already booked before asking for a deposit. Just for clarification, there is no liability on Peerspace’s end when it comes to damages to the event venue although the customer and client cannot take the conversation off of the platform in order to receive such credit card authorization, etc? If we charge more to cover damages, then Peerspace takes a percentage again?
